just want to make sure the e-trex is compatible with a mac. the specs refer only to PC USB

Hazel,
The Etrex Vista HCX is compatible with MAC. Compatibility is really important when it comes to the mapping software. When you are choosing the maps make sure you choose a MAC compatible version. If you are unsure feel free to post a question on that page.

in regard to the compatibility of the map software... I'm looking at the topo canada software and there isn't any reference to mac or PC versions... please advise...

The current version of Topo Canada software from Garmin is Mac compatible, it is classified as version 4 and runs on a program called BaseCamp. There is a previous version, labeled version 2, that is not Mac compatible. This software runs on a program called Mapsource.
