There appears to be a lack of knowledge on kayak friendly GPS units on the internet.

I like venturing or going to places less traveled. Less travel meaning no USCG bouys or markers, not even day markers, also following guts into marshes that can become a maze. I enjoy paddling up small rivers (50' wide at the mouth) and just exploring the wildlife as the shore line closes in, there are lots of feeder creeks and streams that feed these small rivers in VA & MD and along the eastern shore. Plenty of huge fish in these areas because the common boater can not get to these places.

Will this unit work well for this type of application? Do I need additional software, etc?

Hello Kurt,

This unit is sufficient. You will need to buy Topo maps for your area to get mapping coverage. There are no detailed maps preloaded in the GPSMap 76CSX.

A better solution would be the GPSMap 78S which replaces the GPSMap 76CSX. It will allow you to do optional satellite imagery plus take paper maps and scan them into a PC for use in the GPS.

Cheers
