I am thinking about upgrading to the Montana GPS from the 276c I currently have. Here are few question I have:

How many characters can each Way point Name or Route name have? On the 276c it is limited to 10 characters, How many characters does the Montana support?

I currently use MapSource to create way points and routes and also use it to download the way points, routes and the selected maps to the 276c - will I still be able to use Mapsource in this function with the Montana?

It is my understanding to get Satellite Images onto the Montana GPS I will need to use Basecamp, can I use Mapsource as described as above and then use Basecamp to add the satellite images?

Lastly, how do I add POIs and how are they different than a waypoint?

Mapsource is no longer the software used with Garmin GPS Units. It has been replaced by Basecamp that does a better job. Maps are installed using Garmin MapInstall. You will not be able to get full use of the Montana with Mapsource. No worries because Basecamp is better and supports both MAC and PC.

The Waypoint name can have 30 characters.

POI's are loaded using Garmins POILoader. Which is a free download. You can fit more POI's in the unit. They are not really different than waypoints. POI's are usually restaurants, hotels, gas stations, boat launchs .... Somewhere to visit. The normally come with mapping. However People use the POI's as waypoints to get more points in the unit. Waypoints are user marked points. Generally used for navigating a route.

I will call Garmin on this to make sure - I have tried Basecamp and I think it sucks compared to Mapsource.

You may need to play with Basecamp more to see its full potential and ease of use. I use basecamp on a MAC. On a MAC it seems to work much better. The last time I talked to Garmin they were going the fix the inconsistencies between the MAC and PC version.
