Which is better for windshield mount holding smartphone or GPS? Aside from smaller footprint, is there any functional difference?

These two suction cups provide the same suction power, the RAP-224-2 just has a smaller diameter base.

Roxie, that's not quite true according to the Ram web site. According to Ram, the 1U uses a diamond plate mounting pattern and has no ball. Also, it appears to have a somewhat different outer design. The 2U includes the plastic ball.

Although the 2 different suction cups are designed differently the suction capability difference between the two are very miniscule and negligible when holding small electronic devices.
As far as suction cups go, they are not a 100% reliable method of mounting and can fail due to temperature and other factors.
