Can you use the threaded 1" ball and simply screw it into the top plate of this holder?

Unfortunately that will not work. For some customers I have showed them how to screw the RAM-B-202 plate onto the top of it. That works best and is less likely to break.

thanks. Why does the top plate look like its threaded then? Or is it just a hole?

It is just a hole which is counter sunk. Because it is plastic you could thread it. Problem is the balls with threads on them will not screw in deep enough and if you apply some torque to it will break off. Also they are the wrong diameter to work. Screwing a RAM-b-202 or a similar part to the top of it seems to work fine. Just doesn't look as clean.

I attached a RAM-b-238U diamond mount. The top of my RAM-A-CAN has 2 little recessed dimples that line up exactly where 2 screws for the diamond plate go. I drilled pilot holes through the plastic, and the screws (included) were plenty long enough to provide a strong attachment
