Are there any disadvantages of purchasing the DVD version of this map versus the SD card version? It seems to me that the ability to plan routes on a computer and then save them to the GPS device would be a great advantage of the DVD version. But is there some limitation of it that I'm not aware of? Thanks.

SD card can not be updated but will work in multiple units. DVD can be updated but is locked to one unit. Planning routes on a computer will be limited by your unit. If your unit does not support that feature you will not be able to preplan routes on the PC.

Thanks for your quick reply. I should have specified which unit I own: Edge 800.

With the edge 800 you can do planning on the PC with the SD card or DVD. When the SD card is in the unit and plugged into the PC you can view the maps using base camp to do course preplanning.
