How do I resolve the "can't unlock maps" problem?

How do I resolve the "can't unlock maps" problem? Kenwood says I must pay to remove the stereo, pay to mail it to their authorized shop, wait 4-6 weeks then pay for reinstallation. Online forum users say this doesn't always work.

The maps you are using are not registered to the device that is why you are getting the error. It is best to buy the proper map for your unit or try the registration process again. If that is not the problem and there is another issue you may have to follow their instructions and send it in.

Where did you get the map from that is giving you the unlock error?
What is the exact product number of the maps you are using?
Are you trying to use maps for another device on the Kenwood?
