Garmin Basecamp (free download from Garmin) will read maps on your GPS device and display them. You will need a newer GPS unit that is compatible with this process. Which GPS do you have?

The process will work with the nuvi but may not work with the 60CSX.

Is your GPS unit up to date? It will take a while for the computer to read the map (10 min plus sometimes). Also try updating your GPS unit using Garmin webupdater. I doubled checked with our demo unit and it was able to read the mapping.

Great that works. Now I need to know about placing a waypoint ... it seems to be blocked. I would like to do the waypoints on my PC then transfer to the 2595 as I do with my other mapsource maps

It should not be blocked. Give it another try. All you should need to do is use the flag to place a waypoint. Then on the left you can drag the point you created into the Garmin device listed in Basecamp. You may need to turn on the toolbar or use the Tools menu option and select Waypoint.

I can access the hand tool, pointer, zoom and measure tools but waypoint, track and route tools are inaccessible. They are also not accessible under the tools. I can see them but they are not highlighted

I have tested it with no issues. You may want to watch some of the tutorial videos on the product. You can access them through the 'Help' menu in the program.
