From someone who knows little about all this, assuming the computer has a card reader, why would someone prefer a SD card over the CD? And vice versa? What are the advantages & disadvantages of either?

This combo you are looking at is the DVD, update and SD card. It is the same as buying the DVD. We put the kit together to make it easier for customers to get the right parts.

The DVD is locked to one unit. If you were to get the pre-programmed chip from Garmin (different part) then the card be can be used on many Garmins but not copied to another SD card. The advantage of the Garmin SD card is ease of use.
