My wife bought me this device for Christmas. I have never used a GPS before. I am interested is using the device for both Road and Marine directions. For Marine, I will be using the device, in a Kayak, primarily in Ontario, Canada. What are the best options for maps that I will require to purchase? Is there a list of lakes that are covered? What details are provided with the lake coverage? Depth / distance etc? I may also use the device for trails / walking / geocaching etc..
Thank You,

For road navigation I highly recommend getting a Garmin nuvi for the similar cost as buying the software for your GPS unit. It will have a larger screen, voice navigation, and more.

As per lake maps. If you are on the great lakes then you will want Garmin Bluecharts HXCA015R. It covers coastal areas and the great lakes. For inland lakes you will need Inland lakes Ontario. More information is found on the product pages. I included the links below.

Bluecharts

For the great lakes coverage, Bluecharts is much better than Inland lakes

If I need to purchase a different GPS unit that comes with Maps pre-loaded for the road travel, what is the benefit of the GPSMAPsc that comes with no pre-loaded maps?
The reviews for the Ontario inland lakes maps is not very good.
The reviews for the great lakes is much better.
Will the road navigation maps show the outlines of lakes?

The unit is multifunctional but for the price it makes sense to buy a nuvi that will work better for on road use. The nuvi is no good for hiking and other activities.

The road navigation maps do not show much information about bodies of waters. If it shows a lake outline it will not be very accurate. It will not show all lake outlines. Just the bigger ones.
