I have a Garmin 62s that stopped reading the micro sd card. When I looked under the batteries, the retaining mechanism was loose, and there were parts of circuit board all around it. Have you had problems with the retainers for the sd cards? I am not a novice around micro cards, and followed the instructions carefully when inserting it. It worked fine for a year. I now hesitate to replace the unit as I now fear a similar failure.

The metal piece can be knocked out if you are clumsy like me. It is friction fit so you should be able to push it back into place with your finger and have it open and close for the memory card like before. Is the metal clip missing that holds the card in place?

I found the retainer, and pushed it back into place as suggested, however, nothing I do will allow the unit to read the card. When I remove the card and retainer, the machine shows me the base map, as when the unit was first purchased.

I assume the contacts are making a good connection with the card. If you plug the unit into the computer and hold the card down with your finger does the computer see it in Windows Explorer (Mac Finder)?

Have you tried a different card to see if your card got corrupt when it came loose?

When I hold the card in place while plugged into the computer, I can read 3 files on the card. I don't have any other cards right now with the exception of photography equipment.

Do you have maps loaded on the card?

right now it sounds like the metal clip is not holding your card in properly. In the following video I show the card slot. Does yours look and function the same way as the video?

The part that shows you the memory card slot is at about 53 seconds.

Yes, mine looks like the unit in the video. Right now, the mechanism is damaged beyond repair, and the metal clip cannot be made to work. My concern is that I don't believe I damaged anything inserting the card as it went in with no difficulty and worked for a year. What I don't understand is why it came out in pieces, along with parts of the circuit board. The unit has never been dropped that I am aware of (although anything is possible.

I now find myself debating whether to buy another unit as I rely heavily on my gps. One thought occurs: I use the unit occasionally on my adventure motorcycle. The unit sits on a proper RAM mount, and has never suffered misadventure. Could the unit be shaken enough to have caused the damage?

The only time I have caused damage to that connection is when inserting batteries. The metal tab came loose from vibration (or something else) and when I put the batteries in, it caused the tab to break off. I suggest contacting Garmin to see if they are able to do anything under warranty. 1-800-800-1020 If it is over a year I do not think they will but it doesn't hurt to try.
