I got the Garmin Map 76CX and Topo Canada V4 DVD from you last year. Loving it. Can't find any info on the DVD as to the Datum used on the map so I can set up my GPS properly. It should be NAD83, but might be the older NAD27. Which Datum is used on the Topo maps?

Hello Ken,

The Datum and coordinate systems can be adjusted in the software and in your GPS unit. The default setting is WGS-84.

Cheers

Let me clarify my question as to what datum is used in Garmin's Topo Canada V4 DVD maps. In order to use your GPS handheld unit, you must input the correct Datum setting that corresponds to the map you have installed on the GPS unit. If you don't know what Datum is used on the map itself, how can you program your GPS to something you don't know. Since 1990 Canada Natural Resources Canada has adopted NAD83. Prior to that they used NAD27. You must know whether Garmin Topo Canada V4 maps are NAD83 or NAD27 in order to set up your GPS properly. Thanks.

Hello Ken,

You do not need to adjust the Datum or Coordinate system for maps you load into the unit. The unit knows what maps are loaded and will display them correctly for your settings. the unit itself will do any conversions needed. For example if the map was made in NAD27 the unit or software doesn't care because it will convert it to what ever setting you have in the unit and on the PC. The power of technology.

The only time you need to adjust the datum and such is if you are trying to plot your position on a paper map. Then you need to adjust for that. Make sure your unit settings are the same as the paper map your are using.
