I am having difficulty transferring data back to my computer to manage in the 'Basecamp' program. More specifically, I am using a Mac laptop and have a Garmin GPSMAP 421s system. I have followed the instructions and have saved data from the GPSMAP 421s to the SD data card but when I bring the card inside to upload / manage in the Garmin software - it will not open. I have searched the Garmin website but can't seem to find any info / hints. Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Cheers - Joe

Hello Joe,

The data file that Garmin outputs from a sounder like the GPSMap 421S is called userdata.adm ADM files can only be opened by Garmin Homeport on a PC. There is no MAC version at this time. You can run it under Parallels or a boot camp on a MAC if needed. I could not find a converter that supports ADM files as of yet.

Thanks - I will upload my software on my PC. Seems a little odd that I could install and save all the maps to the Data Card via the Mac but can't go backwards. I guess I'll have to hang onto that old desktop for a while yet. Joe

Sorry - one more bit of clarification. You mentioned 'Homeport' - the software provided is called Garmin BaseCamp. Will I need the Homeport package and if so - how do I get that? Cheers - Joe

OK - I should have looked prior to writing my last post - I see that homeport is for sale. Does the BaseCamp software allow you to manage routes / waypoints etc.? If not - the Homeport software only speaks about 'BlueChart' data and not the TOPO Canada data - if I have to order Homeport will I be able to use the TOPO Canada Data? This is all getting a little confusing now. All I want to do is manage the tracks / routes that I have set on my plotter.

Home port is for Bluecharts maps but you can use it to get the data off the card then convert it to something basecamp can understand (GPX) so you can overlay it on your topo maps.
