Does the subscription cover the cost of cellular connection or is there an additional fee to use the phone connection. Would it use the same rate as the spot gen 2

The subscription cost does not cover any of your Cellular costs for that is part of your phones plan. The subscription covers the satellite communications cost that the SPOT beacon will use. The unit connects to your compatible smart phone via Bluetooth which is free. However if you send text messages via the SPOT connect you will have to pay per message once you go over the allotted 5 free ones. The costs are as follows.

$49.99 for 500 Msgs, $29.99 for 100 Msgs, or $0.50 for Individual Msgs
