If I am out doing SAR training and/or hiking in a remote area, is it possible to send a message (SAR team, friends etc.) to give my position and to say I'm okay? Which button would I activate to do this? Do I have to pre-program text messages into the SPOT Messenger or, can I key in a text message directly from the unit?

You would us the OK button on the unit to let everyone know you are fine. HELP if you need assistance. 911 if you need immediate rescue. You will not be able to key in a message. If you want to be able to key in a unique message in the field you will need a different device. You will need the SPOT Connect and a compatible smart phone. Here is a link.
