It seems like one of the restrictions of this unit is that it cannot be blocked from the sky view but on the other hand there is a a free year for the tracking. Is there another device which does not have this unit's limitation of reception and yet has a low connectivity price?

All GPS trackers work best if they can see the sky. The GTU-10 will work without line of sight with the sky. Just dont enclose it in a metal box and always test the install location. You will not find a unit as affordable as the Garmin device in Canada
