I' m looking for an alternative to the Spot tracker and have always liked Garmn products. I want a device to allow loved ones to track my progress on trips to remote areas where cell coverage is rarely available. Does this unit transmit tracking data via cell or satellite?

The Garmin GTU-10 is cell-based for its data sharing. For your requirements right now, the SPOT would be the better device. Another option for tracking is the DeLorme inReach offering, though it too has a montly plan.

I liked the idea of both the Inreach and Spot but was trying to avoid paying for the purchase price of the device, activation fee and monthly or annual fee. I only need the device a week or two a year and was hoping the GTU-10 would be a way to track the position but it sounds like it won't quite work. Off to look at the Spot and Inreach again.

Thanks for the follow up.
