I have a 24' harbercraft kingfisher aluminum hull fishing boat. I have purchased a Garmin 7212 chartplotter and a Garmin GSD 24 digital sounder. I am in the process of selecting a transducer. I am leaning towards this garmin airmar ss270 dual freq stainless 1 KW transducer-through hull and would like your recommendation on what would be the best bet. I do trailer my boat but don't really know how easy to damage the transducer during loading/unloading.

That is a very difficult question to ask without knowing how you trailer your boat and will install the transducer. The fairing should protect it from minor dings. Of course if you run a ground on rocks that could cause unwanted damage. I would install it in an area that it is less likely to get rubbed when putting on your trailer. It is made touch not like a plastic transducer so I think you will be ok

Why is this transducer stated to be for 30' craft or longer? Is it because of the trailering aspect only?

I think it is because of the size of the transducer. Doesnt play well with smaller boats. That is an assumption.
