The specs list notes that the unit calculates workout calories but that it's not heart rate monitor compatible. please will you tell me what the device bases its calorie calculations on if it's not heart rate?

It is a estimate based on your run or ride. It will take into account your age, sex, weight, speed, distance and time ran. We do not have access to the algorithm Garmin uses for the Calculation. When you get a unit with heart rate monitor the estimate will be more accurate but not 100%
