Is there a special charging cord for the Montana models that can be used while mounted with Ram mounts rather than using battery power? From what I have seen it appears to be a special docking station type system...

Yes there is a dock compatible with the RAM Mounting systems, that includes a barewire cable for power. Please follow this link for more details http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-montana-6xx-amps-rugged-mount-with-audio-power-cable.html.

The Montana can also be powered via a regular mini-usb cable. So if using this plastic cradle, you need a power supply/adapter with a mini usb plug.

You can not navigate with the unit when a Computer cable is plugged in. You need the proper Garmin power cable in order to power the unit and use it. It does have a micro USB end but a car power port adapter at the other end.

This is not a reliable way of powering any gps. I've had many Oregons go back to Garmin because the USB connection stopped working. Far better in this case to buy the Garmin Rugged Mount as it has proper power connections which won't fail prematurely. That was the main reason why I upgraded to the Montana, to get a good way to power the gps.

Are you saying non-Garmin automotive chargers with mini-USB cables won't allow to navigate with the unit? I've had a eTrex Vista and it wouldn't allow to navigate when plugged into a computer, but would work fine with a generic chinese auto charger with mini-USB.

I totally agree about the reliability, the eTrex Vista used to power off occasionally, especially when on mini-USB power (on batteries as well, due to poor design). I'm totally excited about the Rugged Mount docking feature, I didn't know about it when I bought the Montana, but when I saw these mounts, I had to order a couple. Especially cool since I already own various RAM Mount hardware so I have all the other parts necessary to mount it to a motorbike or a car.

That is true. Some third party cables will not allow you to use the unit when they are plugged in. That is mainly for Car units.

The power off issues you are noticing with your vista are most likely due to a faulty unit or damage using a non-Garmin cable. When you notice an issue like that you should seek a replacement during your warranty period.
