I am fairly computer literate, yet I find the number of options to get something done with Garmin is confusing. A computer savvy friend was just given a GPS and had no idea Garmin had map/data base options for loading on a computer. There should be a better or more visible explanation for the existence and difference between Base Map and MapSource including how to acquire them and how to update them.

I just did an update using Map Install for the first time. It had me choose the regions I wanted (all of them) and installed them on my 2460. It seems like this was loaded over top of the previous maps rather than updating/replacing them like updating directly from Garmin. There was no option given to update my MapSource program. There had been a choice when updating directly from the website. The website still claims my map update was incomplete.

Not sure how you were trying to load it. If you load it using the lifetime map updater it will overwrite the older maps on the internal memory. If you install it to the HD first then use Mapinstall it will give you the option to load it to the memory card. In that case the old maps may not be deleted.

The update process seems to change often so it is best for you to contact Garmin if you are having problems with the update software.

Please call 1-800-800-1020 when doing the update for assistance.
