I have never owned a gps device. I would like your recommendation for a hand held gps unit that would help me navigate local reefs and locate dive sites.
I have been looking at the etrek30. Help!

The etrex 30 will work fine as a marine navigator but the GPSMap 78S is the recommended device for your use. It will float and has an easier to use interface and the ability to integrate with Marine devices via a serial NMEA0183 connection. They will both read the same type of maps for Marine and Land use. The etrex is made a little smaller for backpackers that need a smaller device.
