Is this suitable for hand-held use - out of country use?

My main use would be in the car but I would also like to use it for walking tours in places like cities in Europe and South America. Would this unit be suitable? I'm a happily retired luddite so ease of use is also a priority. Reviews seem to suggest that map downloading can cause problems - would it be better to go cheap (avoiding lifetime maps) and purchase a new one every couple of years.

The nuvi 1490LMT does have some memory limitations, so here are a couple of other units to take a look at as well.
Nuvi 50LM - http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-nuvi-50lm-with-us-and-canada-mapping.html very user-friendly, with expandable memory for Europe or South American mapping.
Nuvi 2460LMT - http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-nuvi-2460lmt.html a few more bells and whistles, like bluetooth and traffic updates, but still very easy to use.
