I have been using multiple devices and am finally ready to upgrade to a single device. I am debating on purchasing the 650t with City Navigator. I saw in another Q&A that it is NEVER recommended to buy the "t" model with preinstalled maps, but unclear why this is such a disadvantage.

If I buy the 650 and the 100K TOPO maps and city navigator cards separately, would I need to switch out the cards when going between road and off-road? Potentially, I would also like to purchase 24K TOPOs cards... With the 100K maps preinstalled, does that allow for the use of 24K TOPOs on SD Card (i.e. access to both 24K and 100K maps without switching out cards)? It may be as easy as uploading everything on to the 3.5G memory or getting a single sd card (e.g.,32G) that can hold everything I want?

As a eTrekker, this is all new! Any info and advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated and prove most helpful!

Thx!

Paul

Preloaded topo maps are generally older than what you can get on DVD. Also Topo maps on DVD gives you more flexibility. You can load multiple personal Garmin GPS units. You can also have the maps on your PC/Mac for pre-planning without your GPS attached to the PC.

You can load maps to memory cards and to the internal memory. You can load Topo 100k to the internal memory and add the 24k uSD cards to the unit. If you buy City Navigator on DVD you can load it to the internal memory at the same time as Topo and jsut switch between the two in the menu. You wont be able to load a large area of Topo doing that but it should be enough if you are using the 24K SD card also.
