When using it in your car you will need to plug in the power cable it came with. It will charge as you drive. If you USB port provides enough power you can charge it via USB also. The recommended method is in the car while using the nuvi 40LM driving.

Charging a GPS with the USB cable takes a very long time. Using the cigarette lighter adapter will charge the unit much quickly.

2 hours is normal for a GPS navigation device made for the car. It is meant to be plugged in during use. It has battery for pre-planning and short walks in urban areas.

Does anyone have success charging using USB cable connected to power adatpor and get the power from wall? I had it overnight and still didn't get any charge. It seems the only way to charge is to use the adatper in car.

There is an AC adapter made specifically for the Garmin nuvi and zumo models that you may want to try, http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-nuvi-zumo-international-ac-adapter-in-web-packaging.html

That will vary on how much charge you have left in the unit. The unit will not overcharge the battery or wreck it if left on the charger too long. There is no recommendation in the manual. If the battery is dead I would give it 6 hours then check to see if it is full yet.
