You can load the Topo maps onto the GPSMAP 521s. You will be able to see the map data but may lose some ability to search through some POI's.

The main features of the 521S will not be effected. It is a great addition for boating on lakes with no Inland lake or Bluechart coverage. I just took a quick look through the manual to verify back track capabilities, Garmin does not mention that it has backtrack. I don't recall seeing backtrack as an option when I have used this device boating.

Flasher mode is commonly know as A-Scope and the GPSMap 521S will do that. The S means it has a sounder for fish finding/depth sounding.

I purchased the Oregon 450 with Topo Canada, ( CD version).
How would I get the Topo maps onto the GPSMAP 521s unit?
When using the unit, can I switch easily between , lake charts, topo maps and the fish finder/sounder modes?

All you need to do is load the maps to a memory card then put them into the unit. You have to take the card out to switch between maps.

Could one select a few maps and charts for a specific area and load on one memory card, thus allowing for access to both charts and topo's?
If this is possible, would switching between them be an issue?
Not asking for much am I?
Thanks for all your help.

The lake charts come lock on preloaded microSD cards and can not be copied from one card to another.
Therefore, the topo maps and the lake charts can not reside on the same microSD card.
