The reviews on the external mic are for the most part positive but a number of folks are not getting the results (clarity etc) they hoped for. What are your thoughts on this. The built-in mic on my 760 is at best marginal and I would be willing to buy an external but I would like some assurance it will do the job. Is it a location problem for the mic? What say you oh ones much wiser than I?

The sound quality produced by the microphone is dependant on a number of factors. Size, distance, location, and amount of ambient noise all contribute to the quality.
When using the Nuvi for hands free calls, it is best to keep the windows rolled up and the audio system muted on the vehicle. The ambient noise within the vehicle will add unwanted background noise which will make it almost impossible to hear on the other end. In most cases reducing the ambient noise is sufficient for acceptable sound quality.
The external mic is a better quality mic and works best when clipped to the collar of a shirt.
In either case, reducing the ambient noise will aid to producing better sound quality on the receiving end.
