I'm trying to connect my Lowrance Elite 5m GPS to my Midland Regatta VHS radio for DSC radio to GPS connection has two wires, one yellow & one green while the NMEA 0183 cable (NDC-4) has three wires. The radio instructions indicate connecting the yellow and green to the + and - of the GPS. I'm lost any suggestions on correct connections? Also, why doesn't the NMEA standardize all radio to GPS connections with the cooperation of the respective manufacturers?

For the Lowrance NDC-4 the yellow wire is NMEA transmit, orange is NMEA receive and black is ground. Connect the yellow transmit wire to the receive wire on the VHF radio and the orange receive wire to the the transmit wire. Connect the two ground wires together and it should work.

You will need to contact midland to figure out which of their wires is receive and ground. I checked their documentation and could not find what I needed to support their product. But because there are only two wires you can assume that the - is ground (green and black are commonly used for ground) and + is receive. If that does not work just flip the wires around.

NMEA is standardized but that does not mean everyone will follow it precisely.

The reply to the first question will have the information you need. You will need to refer to your Simrad radio manual for the wiring output of it. You will also need to refer to the midland radio for any internal settings you may need to change.

Connect the yellow transmit wire to the receive wire on the VHF radio and the orange receive wire to the the transmit wire. Connect the two ground wires together and it should work.
