Is garmin planning on updating this soon? Just wanted to make sure before I drop a chunk of change on it and it looks like this version is from around 2009.

There is no expected dates for the updates yet. I would assume based on previous years that this years version will be available later this spring.

Since the DVD is the 2012 version, would it be better to get that and load it to internal memory. If I did this, how much memory would I have left on a 76csx. This way you would always have it in your device, which would be easier especially if I want to have the upper midwest fishing guide chip in at the same time, correct?

You would load the DVD version to a memory card for the 76CSX. The DVD and SD card are both 2012. 2013 will be available spring 2012. The nice thing about the DVD is you get one free update within 90 days of purchasing the product.

OK, so the 76csx does not have any internal memory then? So I would not be able to use city navigator and the upper midwest fishing guide at the same time?

There is no internal mapping memory on a 76CSX. If you purchase the midwest fishing on DVD and city navigator on DVD you can load both to a memory card at one time and use the units menus to switch between maps
