I've read from some GPS sites that it's better to buy the unit w/o preloaded maps. If I were to go this route and decided to buy Topo and Marine maps for this unit, is it better to buy them already on an SD card or by a DVD and install? If I buy them on a DVD, does Basecamp do the installation to either the internal memory or SD card? Actually, can I install to either SD or internal memory I guess I should have asked first?

Marine maps come on SD card only and can be used on the PC/Mac using Garmin Homeport. Topo maps come on either DVD or SD. It is better to get them on DVD so you can load other personal GPS units at the same time. Topo on DVD comes with Basecamp and Mapinstall. If on DVD the maps can be loaded to internal or external memory. Maps on the SD card can not be transferred to another SD card or installed on internal memory.

So there's no limit to the amount of GPS units I can send Topo maps to from a DVD (via Basecamp-Mapinstall)?

Lastly, can you move marine maps from device to device (i.e.: Montana 650, to say a 3490 auto (although you probably wouldn't use this device for marine)) without a .unl restriction locked to the unit? -Thanks again.

Marine maps come on preloaded card and can not be copied to another card or device. You can move the card from compatible device to compatible device. If you want to run two GPS at the same time with the same marine map you will need to buy two marine maps
