My immediate need is for a unit that includes (or can download) maps for France. Is this feature included?

Yes the Garmin nuvi 1450LMT can utilize European maps, such as France. You can download the maps from Garmin.com and load them onto a black microSD card. You may also purchase BeNeLux and France maps on a preloaded card:

Thanks Roxie. To be clear, the downloaded maps are free from Garmin.com?
What's the deal with the "black microSD card"? Is this included with the 1450LMT?
What would be the advantage to having benelux/france on a preloaded card? It would out-date, right?

No, the maps will still cost from garmin.com. There isn't a microSD card included with the 1450LMT, but they can use one. The downloadable content from Garmin and the preloaded cards will have the same information.

Okay, I think I'm almost ready to buy, after I check the prices for "black microSD card" and downloadable maps. I'm reading between the lines... the downloads and the card are not a subscription item (i.e. updates available) but merely a shapshot-in-time, right? So if I plan to go to France in October I should wait to purchase?
The preloaded cards are re-loadable, or are they read-only?
Thanks again for your speedy replies.

The preloaded cards and downloads from Garmin's website are one-time only purchases. They are not compatible with the updates, to be able to update we recommend the Europe City Navigator on DVD. We would recommend that you wait until approximately 2 weeks before your trip to purchase the maps. This will guarantee you have the most current maps available from Garmin.

Thanks. I apologize that every answer brings up yet another question. Do I need to have a black microSD card in order to download the Garmin.com maps?

Yes, you will need a blank microSD card to load the European data to.
