I am still getting contrary advice about DVD vs. SD card formats. As I understand the DVD info is locked on one unit. The SD is inter-usable between multiple units. I have Garmin Marine maps that were downloaded off the Garmin web-site for use with an E-trex legend and have been informed that they would be compatible with the Montana 650 that I am considering purchasing. These maps are still on the computer and I am hoping they will transfer to the new Montana. Maps and programs include:
-Blue Chart Americas v2008
-MetroGuide Canada v4
-Topo Canada v4
-Trip and Waypoint Manager v5
Are these programs available to function on the Montana?

Your BlueChart map is locked to a GPS, you won't be able to use it on another unit without purchasing another unlocking code which I am not sure if Garmin has them available still. You can contact Garmin at 1-800-800-1020 for further clarification on the BlueChart.

MetroGuide, topo Canada, and Trip and Waypoint manager are not locked so yes you can install these on multiple computers and multiple GPS units. Garmin does not list MetroGuide software as compatible with the Montana 650, so I do not believe this will work on the unit.

To be clear, DVD software can be updated. Preprogrammed SD cards cannot be updated, but with newer BaseCamp versions you can view the maps onto your computer. SD are not locked, but can only be used in one compatible unit at a time. DVD's are usually locked, except certain topo maps are not locked.
