You comment in line 21. please see the response to the first question (line2).

To get NMEA data from the unit you will need to see page 140 of the pilots guide user manual. You will then need to wire up the data wires from the bare wire cable to the serial port (rs232) of your computer. The cable part number is 010-11385-03

Hello Henri,
Yes, the Aera can be charged using USB, however it does take considerably longer than DC or AC charging.
Thanks!

The port in the battery compartement works well but I dont want to open the device for charging the battery all the time.

In the scope of delivery is only a cable for cigarette lighter and a cable for usb connection to PC.

I dont have a car battery at home so that Ihave to use the usb cable for charging.

Garmin have a AC/DC ADAPTER for 500 area ... s##### p#### shop 25 bucks

Grrr, just traded in my 296 for a new aera 500 and totally dislike the charging on it. I plugged the USB to the back of the unit and have no indication of if the darn thing is charging of not. How do I know if ut is charging???? Not sure that I like this newer version.

When charging it in the powered cradle you will see an indicator on the battery meter. When charging it through the USB port in the house there is no good way to tell it is charging other than the screen is on and in PC mode.

@Jordan: When charging through the usb port in the housing, you can get an charging indication: The Aera 500 appears to the computer as a mass storage device, like any old usb-stick. So just choose "remove device savely" (or similar) from the context menu of the drive, then the Aera will go into "normal" flight or drive mode and you can see the power line symbol for "charging".

The unit will charge when it is in the vehicle or plane cradle. It is recommended to charge it for six hours the first time. After that it will charge when you plug it in to the vehicle. You don't need to worry about unplugging it when the battery is fully charged. My main recommendation is not to store the unit without a full battery charge. Always fully charge the unit before storing it and take the battery out if possible.

Page 162 of the manual will have the wiring diagram for you. Also the wiring diagram should be on the Aera power/data cradle cable. Normally on a black sticker attached to the cable
