Is the Oregon 450 the best GPS to use in heavy tree covered trails? If not, which would you recommend? I would very much like to use the 'Custom Map' feature, however it is not essential.

The eTrex 30 has better reception because it can track two GNSS. It can track GPS and the Russian Glonass system. That gives you almost double the satellites you can track therefore improving your position in hard to track areas like canyons and tree coverage. Another device to consider that is better than the Oregon is the GPSMap 62S but it only can track GPS.
