The Nuvi 855 does not allow for video input or output, therefore can not be connected to a backup camera.

The 855 can be used with a VIB 10 or VIB 11 box that does allow you to hook it up to a backup camera. But, don't get excited-- you have to find one first. They have been discontinued. I can't find one anywhere!

Hello bcargill,
Can you let us know where you got your information because according to our experience and Garmins Technical staff the Nuvi 8XX series does not have external video support.
The Vib 10 and Vib 11 are stand alone media boxes that will send audio such as hands free calls and music to your car stereo. The VIB was made for the Streetpilot C550 and will not work with the Nuvi 8XX series.
Cheers

Unfortunately that feature is not supported in the Nuvi 800 Series. I hate to say this but, everything you read in a manual is not always true. The manual is written before the product is completed and sometimes features in the manual dont make it into the unit or are taken out by the engineers.
I think Garmin forgot to take this out of the manual before publishing it. Also the VIB was discontinued before the Nuvi 805 series was released. Even if it did work you wouldn't be able to get the part necessary to make it function. I apologize for the bad information you have received.

Have a great day

Does the 855 output NMEA data for other devices? Can I use a USB to RS232 to another device?

Two years later and Garmin is still saying on their web site (and in the "Help" files on the 855 itself) that (if you can find one) the VIB 11 will allow connection of a backup camera to the 855. Yet, even though it's mentioned in the manual and the on-board help files, there's no Tools> Settings> Backup Camera selection on the unit. Glad I discovered this before I spent a few hundred bucks on a VIB 11

I believe Garmin makes the best GPS units for use in vehicles but I am amazed (in a bad way) that Garmin still refuses to offer models that support a backup camera. I see tons of posts online asking "Which Garmin GPS units support a backup camera" and unless you want a DEZL with customized features for a truck driver you are SOL (Somewhat Out of Luck) I have been watching for years and feel it is not a good deal to buy an old 5000 or one of the other models offered over the years that had said support when a new model with Lifetime maps and a warranty is less than $150 At some point faithful Garmin folks like myself will jump ship as Garmin is clearly not listening
