How many maps can the 650 handle? And where do they have to be installed - internal memory or on the SD card?

There is no limit at this time with the Garmin maps when loading using an updated version of MapInstall. The limit will be the memory size. I have tested a 16GB card with this unit with no issues

Can you change on the fly from one map to another, out in the field, once you have them loaded on the SD card?

Yes you can switch between loaded maps on the unit in the map menu. Hit the three bars on the map screen to bring up the submenu then select Map Setup
