I understand the difference between maps on DVD and SD. However, I'm planning to use the Montana for 3 purposes: marine coastal and inland navigation (BC) topological mapping (BC and Canada) street maps (Canada and US). So I need lots of maps. Some of these seem to come only on DVD, some only on SD. My question is, is it possible for me to have a variety of maps like this loaded into the Montana at the same time, and if so, do they all need to come from a DVD? Are all of these maps available on DVD? If the marine charts are only on SD, can I have an SD loaded and still load other maps from DVD's? I think if all of the maps/charts were available on DVD then I could purchase a large SD card and load them all onto the device at the same time.

If you have multiple maps on DVD, say Garmin topo Canada on DVD and the Garmin City Navigator North America on DVD, yes you can load regions from these DVDs to the same SD card so you only need 1. However, for any maps that come loaded on an SD card only CANNOT be removed from the SD card and transferred to another one. They are locked to the SD card and cannot be taken off. This goes for all Garmin Bluecharts, as these cannot be transferred to another card, unfortunately. It is also not recommended to use these preloaded SD card with other mapping as writing to these will most likely overwrite the existing Bluechart mapping which will be gone forever. If the maps get deleted off a preloaded card, it is not possible to get them back/fix the error.

Basically, make sure to buy all the maps you can on DVD to use just 1 memory card, but for the marine maps you will need to buy the card, unfortunately there is no other option at this time.
