Does the Garmin need to be plugged into your PC in order to use base camp? If not, how do you retrieve your downloaded maps on your computer to start planning your trip?

You need a compatible GPS plugged in so Basecamp can read the maps from the unit. With the Zumo they include the maps on DVD. I suggest installing them from the DVD for planning.

I have been having problems using a Mac to read the maps but on a PC if everything is up to date it will work well.

Basecamp will read the map that is loaded on the Zumo when it is connected to the computer.
It will take a few minutes for the map to load.

So in other words, I can't just open base camp, and see the maps to plan my trip. I need to plug my GPS (which I have loaded the maps to) into my computer? This is what I did do, and hence my other posted question about getting the big blank screen. Can I use the base camp on more than one computer?

Basecamp is a free download and can be used on any other computer.
Once the Zumo has finished loading into Basecamp, you may need to toggle down at the top of screen to change the map to just the CN North America NT 2013.30 and not the 3D map to view it.
