It is not clear how current the HotMaps data is - is the data from 2008 or 2012... or?

The maps are the latest version being shipped from Navionics. The dates are not listed on the product to verify exactly what date they are. That being said, it does not matter. You get free updates for a year as part of the Freshest map plan. Navionics wants to make sure customers have the latest map for safe navigation.

That seems strange...
If the product was released in 2009 for example. Does the free data update start from my date of purchase or does it automatically download everything starting in 2009? After a year, how much does it cost to keep my data current?

I would pay no attention to the dates for they will be different than the Navionics release dates. Navionics at this time handles the updates so it is best to check their site. Here is a link to the update page. Just copy and paste it in your address bar.

I understand the confusion. It is hard to explain other than the maps they use are a few years older than the release date for not every area and map is updated because there may be no changes in that time and it takes time to get them into the correct format

hi I bought my map (SD)in March 2013 Hot Maps Premium Lakes Canada with ONE year FREE update and two days ago I went to Navionics web side to do the update and it says your free update expired..what a shock??? I try to contact Navionics ..but it seems like nobody is working there.What should I do to have my free update? Thanks

I would try to contact Navionics again for they are the only ones that can rectify the problem you are having.
