What is the difference between buying the 62S with the Canada Topo Map DVD and the 62ST, aside from the price? The 62S appear to have a 1.7G memory vs the 500mb memory for the 62ST version. Does that mean the 62S is more flexible? Lastly how big the SD card can you use for the 62?

The 62ST is preloaded with older Topo software so it is better to buy the maps separately on DVD. You can not use the preloaded maps on other units or your PC.

One undocumented difference is that the 62ST has 4GB of internal flash memory versus 2GB for the 62S. The space is mostly taken up by the preloaded maps, hence the appearance of less memory than the 62S. One option is to take out the preloaded maps and free up the space for something else.

For the price difference it would be cheaper just to buy a blank 4Gb or 8Gb card to put in the unit. Erasing the internal maps would not be the best idea because you paid for them and once they are deleted they will not come back unless properly backed up.

Hello Michael,

Please note that the 62 base model will not accept additional data cards so the 1.7gb is your only source for adding new mapping to the unit.

Hi Mike,

The specification for all 62xx gps do accept Micro SD Card. I am interested in the 62s or 62st. Can you confirm if the 62s will accept Micro SD card?

Another option is to purchase the 62st with US topo map and purchase the canada top dvd separately since I hike mainly in Canada and an updated map would be more useful. What do you think?

Jordan, why are the preloaded map older than the current topo v4? Is this a documented fact? Hard to believe Garmin would load their top of the line unit with dated maps.

Hello Jaber,

We know this from turning units on and evaluating them. There should be no difference with the new GPSMap 62ST because it will have the same limitations as other similar models. If you check the map menu of the Oregon 450TC the version is listed as V2.

This could be because the entire Garmin Topo Canada V4 takes over 5 Gb of space (almost 6GB). The max map size a Garmin GPS unit can use is 4Gb. The older map set was just over 3 Gb.

Even if it was the same version of map it is still better to get the data on DVD so you can use it on your PC also. The topo DVD is not locked so if you have to replace your Garmin GPS unit you can use it with your replacement.

*** Most of the Topo data has not changed between the versions just the street data and some other features. The older mapset will work fine for most people. ***

Unfortunately Garmin doesn't document what version comes in the unit.

Hi Jordan,

I am on your side in buying the 62s with separate v4 Canada topo DVD. You mentioned Garmin handles up to 4Gb and the entire DVD content has 5Gb of data. Does that mean you will need to download a partial map from the DVD up to 4Gb? If you purchase say a larger Micro SD card, will you be able to download from two separate maps sources and create 2 files each smaller than 4Gb for the Gps to choose from?

Hello Michael,
I suggest to all my customers, just load the areas they need. If you don't go to the territories then you can save some space by not loading that area. If you ever decide to go you can always load the area from your PC/MAC.

I have heard you can create two different map files but have not tried it yet, so I am unsure if it is really possible. If I understand it correctly once you load the first map you go into the unit and change its name then reload the next map. If anyone has tried it and gets it to work I would love to know.

I've got the unit and map. However I am not sure how to load the topo map onto the micro sd card. Can you please point me to the right link or let me know how? Also I can't seem to plan or find hiking trails from the map!

Hello Michael,

While using Garmins Basecamp plug in your 62s unit, when dropping your mapping information it should prompt you to choose either the unit or external memory. Also when using Basecamp not all trails will be mapped , but to view existing ones make sure your detail is on high and that you are zoomed in accordingly.

Second question:

I had also ordered the City navigator card. If I get the 62s + DVD and load the topo maps to an SD card, will I have to keep switching the two cards? Or can I put bot on one card? (I realise this is similar/identail to a previous question, but I just want to be sure :-)

- get a 62s with no built-in topo
- put the topo + City Navigator (+ Ontario Backroads?) on a single SD card
- use these maps interchangeably
- and the original question: if I buy the 62st, can I upgrade the built-in topo map? or is getting the 62s the better/only choice?

Hello Frank,

You can put the topo and the City Navigator on one card if you use Garmin Map Install that comes with. You can also load the maps to the internal memory. We dont recommend the built in mapping because it is not up to date, that is why they can fit all of Canada in a GPS. The new software you can only fit half.

* You can not upgrade Topo maps in the unit or on the PC.

I dont know if the Ontario Backroads maps is compatible with the new Garmin map format used in the GPSMap 62S. You will need to contact them for info on their software.
