You are right, just send a map to unit or SD card and rename gmapsup.img for a most convenient name ( ex:topo or road etc.), send another map and rename it.After you can load any of theses maps in different profile.

hi Jordan, I'm looking at buying a gps and never used one before. I live in Halifax nova scotia and would use the gps in nova scotia. I hunt and atv,so I would like to be able to trace atv trails that my buddies take me on so I can use them by myself and not get lost, I would also like the gps to show the lakes and include thier names.Would you suggest the garmin 62s or a different model

Hello Joey,

Any mapping Garmin handheld will do. The 62S being the cream of the crop. Don't forget Topo maps and marine maps for your adventures. The Oregon 450 is another suggestion. The touch screen on the Oregon 450 makes map navigation very easy.

Hello,

We have tested out birdseye and it is a excellent service, it works great for areas that are lacking programmed map coverage.

Hope this helps!

I have a new question:

Since the 62s and 62st both have internal memory and micro sd expansion slots, could one, for example, have TOPO on the internal memory and City Navigator on the sd card and switch between the two maps without any hassle?

Hi Tristan - Yes, you could definitely orchestrate something like that. I'd recommend either:

1. Use a 62ST (preloaded with Topo) and use the SD slot for City Navigator, or

2. Use a 62S with one SD card devoted to topo maps, another for City Navigator.

The unit also has a 1.7GB internal memory so that is available for mapping as well, but an additional 4GB card is only about $10 right now.

Good question! Please let us know if you have any others.

what is the size please of the FREE and available internal memory for maps on the 62S?
I previously had loaded a 1.5GB map in the internal memory- Now I have deleted it and wanted to replace it with an other but unit says 'insufficine space".
Under my computer it says only about 85GB used in real terms but there must be hidden files????? as right click the 62S under USB mode show 1.7 GB used?????????
why could I place a gmapsupp image there before and not now???? any clues please help (it's my hubby's gps and he's going to go crazy if I've broken it... :0( )

Hello Jackline,

The GPS has about 1.7Gb internal memory in the 62S. How are you loading maps? It doesn't sound like you are using the Garmin MapInstall program.

I would try loading a very small area with Garmin MapInstall. Then choose a larger area but smaller than 1.5Gb in size. When you load a new map it erases the old one. If there are any unseen files it should delete them also. That may fix the problem you are noticing.

Cheers
Jordan

You should not copy any other maps to the Backroads card. It would be best to load the other maps on a blank card or the internal memory of the GPS unit. If you buy the DVD you can load multiple maps to one card but the backroads will be locked to that one unit.

The T models have maps on them so the majority of the memory is not accessible without losing your maps.
