Hi.
We are seriously interested in this unit. We are curious what type/detail of topo map is pre-installed on the unit?

Any suggestions for what maps we might need for the Coastal British Columbia ares?

Hello Joe,

There are no Topo maps loaded on this unit. There is DEM data that allows certain areas (mountains) to look 3D. This device is for use in a car only and can not be used properly for hiking or boating. The maps preloaded in the unit are sufficient for BC.

Ok thanks for the info. We are planning to use this unit in our truck and we frequently drive on remote mountain/logging roads that do show up on our friends handheld GPS that is loaded with topo maps and road maps.

Am I correct in understanding that this unit is capable of downloading topo maps on it as well?

Hello Joe,

You can load Topo onto the GPS unit. For your use I recommend a handheld GPS unit like the Oregon or 62S. Vehicle navigators are very limited in their use. Maybe a combination handheld and nuvi will work for you too.

If Topo Canada maps can b loaded into the unit, and tracks can be recorded ... then Garmin Connect should be able to download that track into it's software. Is this correct?

on Garmin's site, they list all the maps that can be downloaded onto the 3790LMT. They include Canada Topo.

Hello steve,

The maps can load in the unit but the unit is not for outdoor use.

The 3790 does not support tracks like handhelds and the unit is not compatible with Garmin connect as of today. If you are looking for a unit to collect tracks the handhelds are what you want. the Oregon 450 is great.
