I have a HTC Desire with the otterbox defender case on it. The question I have is are the clips the same size as the iPhone cases?

The mount that you are looking at is not made for any type of Defender case from Otterbox. In order to mount a device that is in a Otterbox Defender case using a RAM Mount, you will have to use a universal style mount.

My personal recommendation is the RAM-HOL-UN4U. This cradle is very strong and suitable for phones similar to the iPhone in size. Please see this page:
