Installing Maps to SD Card?

If I put (copy/paste) my v4 Ontario Topo map onto the unit's memory the unit reads it fine. If I put the same map onto the sd card (copy/paste)while the card is in the unit, the unit does not acknowledge the card even exists (ie when I 'select map' the card does not show up, only the maps on the unit's memory show up). I have tried two cards and had no luck getting the Dakota to read maps off either. I tried it with v4 Quebec also. Do you have to use basecamp or mapsource to put maps on a card but not to put them on the unit's built in memory? Any hints about getting the unit to read the cards (which I know have the maps on them)?

I had the same problem... I think?
I created a folder on the sd card, named it Garmin and copied the map to the folder. inserted the card to my Legend and it worked for me, hope it does for you.

Hello Ron,

Please use MapInstall for installing maps. When you use MapInstall it will allow you to choose the memory card instead of the internal memory. MapInstall comes with the mapping on DVD.

Cheers

Thanks. Rollinon, you hit the nail on the head for my .img files. I put them in a newly created Garmin folder on the card and it works. Thanks!
I also have .nrg files, and these don't work (yet). Can I convert them to .img?
