Do you have to be close to a road system for Spot to work for send help or 911 emergency? We live in the Yukon and travel many miles off road. How does the send help work? For example if a person is broken down on a ATV 200 miles from a road and needs someone to go out and help but it is not life-threatening, would the message for send help only go to the contact persons, so they could arrange to have someone sent out? How about a life-threatening emergency? Would help come to a remote area 200 miles in the bush? What type of help would be sent? Would this work in Alasks where there are not roads but only water travel?

The messages are sent to the Globalstar satellites (same as the GM OnStar) so coverage is fairly complete in the northern hemisphere. You can see a coverage map at the Spot web site http://www.gpscity.com/spot-satellite-gps-messenger.html. Send help sends a preprogrammed message to people you have previosly selected (using a web page). They would get a GPS location attached to the canned message. Sending an SOS message alerts the Spot team to contact 9-1-1. The newer Spot Connect apparaently will allow sending customized messages. These are explained in detail at the Spot web site http://www.gpscity.com/spot-satellite-gps-messenger.html

Hello Mig,

You have no need to worry except if you head to the poles. the poles are not covered. There is a coverage map on the Preview page about halfway down. When you press the 911 button the messages go out to a central call center and from their emergency services are dispatched may it be GEOS or a local search and rescue. 911 is to be used for life threatening emergencies only. If you break down then you use the HELP button to let loved ones know you need to be extracted or assisted but it is not life threatening.

Not sure if you had time to read the product description. It explains the service well. Please also feel free to call.
