You can but you will need to export make the KML file a GPX using GPSBabel then use Basecamp to load into your GPS.

This is not a support use of the unit. It's a work around but first you need to know a lot about the technology. I suggest reading the Google earth blog to learn about the functionality of Google Earth.

KML = Keyhole Markup Language (file format Google data is saved in)

You save your route in KML format then use GPSBabel to translate the file into something Garmin Basecamp understands, GPX. Then you can load your GPS using basecamp and the GPX file you created.

Because you are new, I suggest that you download Garmin Basecamp. Then when you hook up your GPS to the computer Basecamp will read the maps. You then can use Garmin Basecamp to plan a route and send it to a GPS using the maps preloaded on your nuvi 550. No need to fuss around with file conversions
