I wasn't really sure what category to place this story in... Motorcycle or Geocaching. However, since it involves a modification to the bike, I figured that category would work best, even though it was geocaching that prompted me to make the modification in the first place!

Last year I got the middle-age itch... it was time to recapture some of my youth. What better way to do it than start riding a bike again? Since I hadn't ridden in many, many years, I thought I should start out with a smaller bike, so, after a little hunting, I was able to find a 1983 Suzuki Tempter GR650 with less than 9,000 original km on the clock at a great price. The bike had been in storage for a while and needed a little tlc, such as replacing some signal lights, changing the windscreen brackets and de-rusting the fuel tank.

Once I got her going, I immediately started riding all over the Manitoba countryside. This is what got me back into geocaching. It was a new way to get to caches that were more than a walk away and it was fun! The problem was that I had trouble navigating. I would have to get a basic heading to a cache location, pocket my Garmin 60CSx GPSr and ride. The maze of minor highways soon had me flummoxed and I found myself stopping more and more often to re-acquire my bearings. It was really bad due to the major flooding Manitoba experienced in the spring of 2011 with all of the road closures and bridge wash-outs.

For this year, 2012, I was determined to make my geocaching life a lot easier. After a search online, I found that RAM mounts would probably fill the bill for me quite nicely. GPSCity had the parts at great prices and were located in Canada, so that made it a no-brainer for me.

I placed my order for the RAM-B-174-GA12U package, which was everything I needed to mount the 60CSx to a bike. The order was made on a weekend, shipped on the Monday and arrived Tuesday. All I can say is, "Wow - that was fast!"

I had already watched the installation videos, so within 30 minutes of opening the package I was ready to ride. The only issue I had was that I tried to mount to the brake bracket using the spacers (as shown in the video), but in my case, the spacers weren't needed as they made the screws too short.

I took a quick ride and the mount works great! There is zero vibration and I was able to position the unit so it is easy to view but doesn't block my view of the road or my instruments. I grabbed a quick cache and came home.

I'm looking forward to lots of bike-caching this summer! I think I will also eventually put a RAM base and arm in my car so I can transfer the cradle/diamond plate & ball combo to and from both vehicles at will. (I should have got the Navigation package on the car, but...!)

Thank you RAM and GPSCity for a great product, excellent installation instructions and blazing fast shipping!

GARMIN MAP76CSX ON SKI DOO TOURING 380

Mounted the new Garmin Map 76csx on the sled using the RAM mount with the 1" plate base. No joke, it took less than 1/2 an hour to mount it and that was taking my time! Since I don't have a tach, the mounting location was easy to choose, and easy to see/reach.

The mount works great and holds the GPS very snug. I didn't hard wire the unit to the sled's battery, but it still worked great on a -20C day. You can see in the pic that on this fresh snow day, the screen of the GPS kept getting covered, but when breaking trail, I'm not looking down at the GPS very often... just trying to stay out of the rhubarb!

The Garmin Map 76csx works flawlessly. I am upgrading from a Garmin E-Trex Summit, which worked great but lacked mapping capabilities. I was able to load maps from a friend's TopoCanada software, and with the 4 gig card, I have more than I'll need. Since I'll primarily be using this for fishing, being waterproof was a must. This should be my GPS unit for a long time to come!

I also bought the u-bolt mount and look forward to exchanging it between the Foreman 450 and the boat come spring!

RAM MOUNTS ON MY KAYAK

I always carry my Garmin 76 , so I decided to install a ram ball and mount it on my fishing kayak. Loaded with Topo Canada it make a great tool for exploring new lakes and marking favorite fishing holes. Also can be used to track your workout if you are just out for a day of exercise.

This is the RAM mount setup on my new 2008 Yamaha FZ1. I was racking my brain trying to figure out where to mount everything due to the lack of fairing but RAM Mounts came to the rescue. I used 2x 1in. Steel U-Bolts on either side of the handlebar mount, a long arm and the cradle for my GPSMap 60Cx. The radar mount consists of a short arm and an Extension Cradle Plate with Ball. It works perfectly ! Thanks again GPSCity.com.

I just bought a new (to me) Subaru Outback and needed to install my Sirius Radio and GPS in my new ride. I had a klunky "bean-bag" mount for my GPS (slid off the dash during turns!) and a poorly-designed car mount for my Sirius in my old Subaru. I wanted a nice, clean, easy mount system. An internet search brought me to ExpressMounts and the wonderful RAM mount system. I opted for the sticky on a screw-down plate for both. I used the Ezy Mount system for the GPS so I can easily stash the unit in the glove box. Using the website made it easy to pick which cradle I needed. My Sirius radio slid out easily already from its dock, so I mounted the dock directly to the RAM mount. The 2-sided sticky tape held great! The ball-and-socket adjustment system is brilliant and works great! I am VERY PLEASED with my RAM mount system and ExpressMounts was a joy to work with!

LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES TRIP

Dad and Me at the Pavillion near the Dam

My dad and I do some father-son motorcycle trips. We both avoid the superslab when ever possible. Late last September he called and wanted to ride over to the Land Between the Lakes with a request to route it through the more scenic areas.

I've got a Garmin Quest with Mapsource software so I fired up my copy and plotted a meandering route out and back. I've got my Quest mounted on my BMW with a RAM mount and the Quest charging module.

We had a blast, just tooling around the different back roads. It was a great day. We don't get to spend enough time together any more.
