THIS IS A GOOD PRODUCT BUT...

Pros: see review.
Cons: see review.

My RAM mount cradle for the Garmin Nuvi 50 series GPS was well made & fit the Nuvi 50 perfectly.

My RAM mount diamond plate w/ 1" ball was well made and fit the Nuvi 50 cradle perfectly.

My RAM mount medium arm B-socket was well made & easy to use.

My RAM mount motorcycle mount base kit w/ single 1" ball is functional but the fit & finish of this part left something to be desired. This part is considered to be a universal fit which in my experience means it may or may not fit as indicated in the instructions.

In my case it would not attach to either the brake or clutch handlebar clamp of an '09 H-D FLTR because the supplied screws are too short for this application. I reluctantly installed this piece to the handlebar with the supplied U-bolt.

Installation of this kit to the handlebar using the U-bolt clamp will more than likely cause some sort of damage to the bar (scratches etc.). The kit should have come with protective material to prevent the possibility of this happening. I split open a large piece of heat shrink tubing and wrapped it around the bar prior to installing the U-bolt.

As a unit this kit works as advertised & is adjustable within limits. Longer arms are available if required.

The cradle itself has a cut-out for the GPS speaker which is a nice touch under limited circumstances. At highway speeds you will not hear audible instructions from the Nuvi 50 even if the volume is turned all the way up. This lack of audio is compounded if, like myself you wear ear plugs and/or a full face helmet. You may not agree but I do not consider the absence of audible instructions a downfall of this setup.

The electrical socket/connection at the back of the Nuvi 50 has been secure while riding on paved roads & I don't expect that to change. If the security of this connection is a concern or becomes a problem some strategically located velcro should do the trick.

Currently I am using an outboard (cigarette lighter) electrical connection that comes as standard equipment on my bike. If you don't have a connection like this the Nuvi 50 can be hard wired to a motorcycle using an optional power cable from Garmin.

Using a Nuvi 50 on a motorcycle has some obvious drawbacks ie: the unit is not waterproof and it will be difficult at best to receive audible instructions. In my opinion and considering the cost of the Nuvi 50 both of these drawbacks are acceptable.

That said, using the Nuvi 50 on a motorcycle would be difficult if not impossible without the RAM mount specifically designed for this GPS system.

All of these pieces can be purchased separately but I believe it is cheaper to purchase them in kit form.

The RAM mount cradle designed for the Nuvi 50 is an absolute must even if you decide to design and build your own custom mounting system for your motorcycle.

Even considering my disappointment in the mount base, if you want to install a Nuvi 50 on a motorcycle at this point in time the RAM mount for this system is the only way to fly.

I would not hesitate to purchase other RAM mount products in the future.

Even though it is not part of the product review I would like to include the following:

I have found even the best GPS systems can occasionally give false information. These devises are nothing more than a navigational aid and the information they provide should never supersede what you are actually seeing from the drivers seat or saddle of your vehicle.

I believe a GPS system which is not used responsibly can become a distraction resulting in serious injury or death.

When it comes to riding a motorcycle, it's the journey not the destination that counts. Getting lost once in a while may add to the adventure.
