GREAT NUVI 550 MOUNT
This is necessary if you plan on geocaching from your bicycle with the Nuvi 550. I use a Garmin Edge 800 on the bike but when geocaching I snap this unit on.

GPS MOUNT
Pros: solid, secure mount Cons: adhesive layer on bar tape separated from rubber
I had a previous mount that broke while riding. My GPS skidded down the road and into a creek. I've ridden several times with this mount. It holds the GPS very securely. I did have a problem with the handle bar tape. It allowed my mount to rotate. I wrapped electrical tape over top the rubber tape and now the GPS stays where placed.

ROAD BIKE MOUNTED
Pros: simple. very secure. Cons: none.
I mounted the RAP-274-1-GA32U directly to my Ritchey Pro stem with heavier zip ties than provided. Just use the handlebar bracket on the stem. Very secure. Doesn't conflict with my handlebar mounted computer or light. The Ram mount hold my Nuvi 500 much tighter than the car mount that came from Garmin with the unit.

VERY NICE
It works well, looks and feels sturdy. But the plastic strips could be stronger

WORKS ON MOTORCYCLE
Pros: minimal bracketry when detached Cons: sticks up kinda high but not too bad
Motorcycles are not listed as an application (just bicycles), but it works fine on my Buell street bike. I can see how it could rattle off a dirt motorcycle or mountain bike, but works for me.

NICE SOLUTION FOR MY NUVI 500
Pros: works Cons: sticky pad
The mount was easy to install. Two plastic ties hold the bottom of the mount over a pad that wraps around the handlebar and is sticky on one side. In my package, when I peeled the paper off the pad, the stick stayed with the paper instead of the pad. It worked anyway.
I bought several of the bases so I could use the holder on other bikes too. I bought a RAM plastic holder for another GPS to use also.
I like using this GPS since it has topo in bike mode.

GPS MOUNT ON BICYCLE
Pros: very sturdy and strong Cons: none
The bicycle mount was easy to install and much sturdier than I had anticipated. The mount holds the GPS unit and I don't have to worry about it falling off or coming loose over rough roads and terrain. When GPS is not attached to the bike, the female mounting receptical (permanently attached the bike) is very small and unobtrusive. I would recommend this mount if you need to attach your GPS to a bicycle.

GOOD IF GPS USE ON BIKE IS OCCASIONAL.
Pros: tiny stub when gps not mounted. Cons: gps vibrates on bumpy roads.
I ride mountain and road bikes, roads and trails, 15-50 miles at a time. The Garmin Nuvi 500/550 is a great car GPS and a very good bike GPS. I've had it in rain for four hours with no problem. It will not display uploaded tracks, but otherwise it works great. My primary use (untested) is to tell someone where to pick me up if I have an accident or bike failure.
There is another RAM mount, not sold by GPSCity, model RAP-274-GA32, that has the cradle fixed to the handlebar even even when the GPS is removed. This is a better option if the GPS is always used on the bike because the GPS vibrates less on rough roads or trails, and it's easier to see. I have it on my mountain bike and I'm sticking with it.
This mount is great when the GPS is used occasionally because it leaves a small stub on the handlebar (not the whole cradle) when the GPS is not used. The small stub reduces wind resistance, and has a cleaner look. When the cradle is mounted, the connection between the stub and the cradle allows the GPS to vibrate on rough roads or trails, and it can be hard to read. Stopping or waiting for a smooth section works.
The mount comes with an adhesive-backed rubber strip that goes under the zip-ties. I tried not using it, but the mount slips around the bar, even with the zip-ties very tight. I added the strip and it stays in place.
