JUST ONE FLAW
I wanted this mount for use on a motorcycle and was impressed with the one-piece design. However, when I set it up on my bike I found that the cable can't be connected to the GPS before placing it in the cradle (access to the back of the unit is difficult afterit is in the cradle). It looks to me like if the cable was connected and not disconnected before taking the GPS out of the cradle that something would be broken. I thought about grinding away the reinforcement rib that is causing the problems, but that wouldn't leave enough material for the right side of the cradle.
It would be close to perfect if it were not for that and if access to plug and unplug the cable was not an issue then I'd certainly use this cradle. Instead of this I used a Garmin cradle and it works very well (although it was about twice the cost and uses a locking lever).

EASY MOD TO IMPROVE CRADLE.
This cradle is designed so you have to connect the power cord only after the GPS is in the cradle.
On my motorcycle it's very hard to hook up the mini-USB power cord.
However, I took a grinder to the area and relieved the opening, then cleaned up the area with a small file. Now I can hook up the power cable, and just pop it into the cradle.
I'm surprised that RAM didn't design it this way from the start.
This mod took less than five minutes to complete.

I'M SATISFIED
Pros: good quality, secure fit, easy to use
The cradle is a single piece of moulded plastic. As such it has no moving parts, and not much to go wrong. It holds my Nuvi 550 very securely. The 550 clips in and out easily using a compression fit. A diamond plate screws into the back allowing the cradle to attach to a variety of mounts including a suction cup for my car windshield and a stem mount for my motorcycle.

Fits the Nuvi 500 (or 550) perfectly, very secure (needs to be for motorcycle use,) and it's well made. Very reasonably priced, as well. The RAM system allows a lot of latitude in mounting, by selecting bases, arms, etc., to fit the particular application.

ISSUE WITH NUVI 500 GPS CRADLE
The issue I have with this cradle is a problem I have encountered when trying to use my 12v power source. The cradle for the unit does not allow the power to be plugged in before the unit is placed in the cradle. There is no opening in the cradle to allow the power to be plugged in and then the unit to be placed in the cradle. The only way to accomplish this is to place the unit in the cradle and then plug in the power source. When you have a tight space like I do for the mounted gps, I have to take the mounting arm off the bottom ball joint, plug in the power and then try and place the unit and arm back on the bottom ball joint and tighten it.

GARMIN 500 CRADLE
Pros: best motorcycle gps cradle out there. Cons: not easy to insert power cord if tight clearance.
Well designed, easy in-out, yet holds the GPS firmly under off-road vibration (motorcycle). I cut a notch to allow the power cord to line-up with the port because of a clearance problem in my installation. Would be good if this was made into the design.

NUVI 550 CRADLE
Pros: sturdy surrounds all four sides. Cons: havent found any.
You couldn't ask for a more secure mount. It surrounds the unit on four sides (as opposed to the one supplied with the unit witch only snaps into the top and bottom). I haven't installed a direct wire kit yet so I have no opinions on other peoples difficulty on plugging the unit in while in the cradle. The cradle with the rubber ball mounts and arm give a solid vibration-free place for the GPS.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
Pros: strong, reliable Cons: may be hard to plug in power cord
I generally love the RAM mounts have them for motorcycle, bicycle, and boat. This Cradle is a little awkward with plugging in the power cord of the nuvi 500. You MUST plug in the power cord after putting the GPS in the mount. This is a problem for me on my boat and motorcycle as there are obstructions behind the GPS.
A minor cut-out (take out the dremmel) above the cord plug-in spot should take care of the problem (allowing you to plug in first, then slide in mount).

GOOD VALUE FOR A MOTORCYCLE GPS (WATERPROOF)
Pros: fast refresh & sat. acquisition, replaceable batter Cons: screen scratches easily, speaker buzzes above 60%
Nice fast satellite acquisition, and calculation of routes. Motorcycle gps's are expensive, this one works fine for a bike (meant for scooters), and is much cheaper than motorcycle specific models. I used a Ram short arm to mount this on my 99' Triumph Tiger (left side of handlebar). Takes a standard mini USB connector for both power and data and comes with a replaceable battery (thank you Garmin).

BE CAREFUL THAT YOU DON'T DAMAGE THE TRIM.
Pros: sturdy, fair price. Cons: strength of clip can separate trim from gps.
Good sturdy cradle. Be sure to pull the top clip with both hands so that it doesn't start to split the front trim from the rest of the gps. I haven't hooked up the power cord yet so I can't comment on the awkwardness of plugging it in while the gps is mounted.

WORKS GREAT FOR MOTORCYCLE USE.
Pros: securely holds the gps, easy to use. Cons: none
I have been using the RAM mounting system for years with NO troubles ever. After purchasing the nuvi 550 waterproof GPS for a sport touring bike, the RAM mount was the only reliable mounting system I would use. The nuvi cradle holds the GPS unit securely, and it quickly releases to remove the GPS from the bike. Once the mounting arm is tightened, that mount WILL NOT move. Really good stuff, nothing like the flimsy mounts Garmin offers. Dont take chances with your expensive GPS.

NUVI 500 RAM MOUNT
Pros: ram mount easy to install. Cons: power connector installation
I love the product as i have a number of ram mounts on my bike. The mount is solid. THe only problem is that you cannot install the power connector to the unit until it is in the cradle and once it is in the cradle you have to loosen and turn the unit to locate and plug in the power adapter........makes it a little frustrating if on a trip and making frequent stops. I can see where the connector or cable tip will bend and wear at some point making it unstable to use in the future. The Garmin mount is much easier to use.

RAM GPS MOUNT
Pros: fits my existing older ram mounts Cons: power cable needs to be inserted after mounting
Used RAM mounts for years and they are good quality reliable products. This particular mount for the 550 has 2 small but irritating issues. The top clip is very tight to get over the gps and the power cable has to be inserted into the gps after the unit has been inserted into the cradle as there is not sufficient clearance when the gps is at the angle which is needed to insert into the mount.

Pros: excellent fit, finish, and construction Cons: none that i have found/encountered yet
I got this to use in conjunction with the Motorcycle Stem Mount. I was very impressed to find that the unit was a solid construction, and held the GPS with NO movement what so ever. The Nuvi 550 could also be heard at street legal speeds in town with a full face helmet on, due to the opening in the rear of the Cradle, providing clear directions. THIS IS A REAL PIECE OF CRAP !!!
Cons: made of poor quality material
When I first received this mount I was very impressed.... It held the GPS very Securely. When I tried to mount the GPS with the cord plugged in, it was a NO Go!! You must plug the USB cord in after it is mounted, whitch is all by feel since this is between the handle bars and the windshield of my motorcycle. Other than that I still thought it was money well spent..... Until Today. I was returning from a Patriot Guard Mission, when the GPS jumped out of the mounting cradle and I nearly lost it at 55 MPH. It was a good thing the USB cord held on to it or the GPS would be history. I pulled the bike to the side of the road and tried to put it back into the cradle. Wasn't going to happen!!! The bottom lip of the cradle was broken completly off, and gone. This unit has not been abused, hit with anything, subjected to extreme cold or hot. It was purchased brand new about 6 months ago. I need to use my GPS on my motorcycle, and to my knowledge there is nothing any better, so I bit the bullet and just ordered two of them so at least I have a back-up when the next one just up and fails. When I get the new one I guess I will have to wrap duct tape around it as insurance to not to lose my GPS going down the road. Sad situation, but these things can not be trusted. Seriously, It just gave way and broke for No Reason! Texagander

IT JUST WORKS
That's basically it - It Just Works.
It does everything you would want, nothing you don't want, and in an inobtrusive way as possible.
It also really latches on tight to the GPS itself, inspiring a fair amount of confidence that it will not let go when riding a dual-sport motorcycle over trails. Dispite this, it is not difficult to unlatch the GPS when taking things off the bike for parking in unsavoury areas, but it does take two hands.
Yes, you can use the charging/power cable while the GPS is in the cradle, and there is a cutout on the back of the cradle to let the guidance voice come out (though, on a motorcycle, the voice is entirely inaudible). I didn't have any trouble plugging in the cable with the GPS in the cradle.

RAM MOUNTS ARE THE BEST
Pros: tilt & firm hold Cons: cord can't stay in gps for removal/insert in cradl
The Garmin Nuvi 500 is the 3rd GPS I've used on my BMW Motorcycle. This is the 3rd Ram Mount Cradle I've purchased from GPSCity and have been very pleased with the products & service. I already had the diamond/ball mount so I just needed the cradle. GPS pops in and out easily but holds securly. Range of motion on ball mount is good for different angles. Only negative would be that the power cord has to be plugged/unplugged when the GPS is in the cradle. Searching for that little hole in the back is a little difficult with motorcycle gloves & helmet on.

VERY GOOD - JUST ONE MINOR COMPLAINT
Pros: very good fit & finish. holds the nuvi very well. Cons: off-center mount causes small issue
Cradle is very good in fit, finish and quality. I do see what the others are saying about the power cord. My very minor complaint has to do with the rear mount connection being off-center. I use it on my bicycle with the handlebar rail mount. Being off-center, it tends to make the mount rotate on the bar on rough roads & offroad. I'm sure I can fix this with a rubber pad or tape under the mounting zip ties.
Delivery was unbelieveable! Ordered one evening, was at my door a day and a half later - on standard ground service. Thanks GPS City!

GOOD, BUT NOT PERFECT
Pros: good quality Cons: design could have been better.
top quality, as expected from RAM mount, but the design requires gps be unplugged before mounting or removing unit (which can be a hassle). I considered cutting away the interfering material, but it's made in such a way that the whole right side would be liable to break off easily if I did that, so I'll live with the hassle.
